About Family of Valentine Stone


Valentine Stone was born 1751 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford, Virginia Colony and died 1822 in Bath County,Kentucky.  His father was Josaih Stone, who was born in England abt 1725 and sailed to Virginia as a cabin boy at an early age.

Both Valentine and his father faught in the Revolutionary war, including Valley Forge and Yorktown.

Today, Valentine's descendents are found in several states.

Valentine Stone was born in 1751 IN Stafford, Virginia. Parents were Josiah Stone and Mary Coleman. He moved near Boonesboro, Kentucky. Later moves took him to Bath and Clark Counties in KY. In Clark County he settled on Bald Eagle (a branch of Big Flat Creek). Married (1) Evans (2) Mrs. Kezziah F Madden, a widow. Bath County, Kentucky. He was a land surveyor. His son, Robert Stone wrote "Some of Patrick Henry's first surveys as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia mention Valentine Stone (Treasury Warrant #3121 entered 23 May 1780 on Howards Upper Creek-Fayette co. (now Kentucky)".

Valentine married his second wife, Keziah French Madden (widow of G. Madden). The couple had 6 children. Valentine was a stocky, strong man, has been described as 5 ft, 10 inches, muscular, with weight of 225 pounds.

Valentine Stone was a private in the Revolutionary War and fought alongside his father, Josias. He was in Grayson's Additional Contnental Regiment, assigned to the Main Army. The gentry of Prince William Co. had organized an Independent company commanded by Capt William Grayson and Philip R Lee. Their uniform was based on one of Washington's uniform, known as "Virginia Blues". Conflicts were in northern New Jersey, , battle at Philadelphia. the regiment had severe caualties at Monmouth Courthouse, then was merged with Gist's regiment. He, his father and Zephania contributed food, clothing, pasturage for the troops who were starving near Valley Forge and Yorktown. This is called Patriot Service

Valentine received a Kentucky Land Grant signed by Virginia governor Patrick Henry for his service. He left Virginia in 1790 to move to Kentucky on the Kentucky land grant. By 1799 Valentine and family were in Bath Co., Kentucky, settling on Bald Eagle Creek, branch of Big Flat Creek on the 2000 Acre land grant. Walter S. Stone
